Butler/Till is proud to be one of 6,000 Certified B Corporations from more than 80 countries and 150 industries across the globe. With six wins in the Best for the World Workers category, we’re setting our sights on winning Best for the World across four other categories.
How did we get here? Let’s start at the beginning. The B Corp Certification by B Labs is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors ranging from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. Simply put, B Labs is using business as a force for good. B Labs is currently undergoing significant updates to their recertification process and standards for B Corp recognition. While B Labs updates their requisites, Butler/Till is stepping up and ahead of the curve. New this year, we are hyper-focused on strengthening our B Corp scores by forming new employee committees with specific goals.
Our B Corp subcommittees are working together to improve our accountability across all B Lab sectors including but not limited to: business purpose, ethics and anti-corruption, impact management, living wages, climate, human rights, environmental management, collective action, and justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI). Serving on the B Corp Committee, employees advocate for and challenge our unique standards, serve as a resource for other employee-owners, facilitate educational events, and track and monitor all the good that we’re doing.
If it sounds like a lot of work, it is. The average B Corp application takes about a year and half to complete, but as a purpose-driven enterprise, it is more than worth it. Our B Corp committee supports the tedious application process by designating smaller specific groups to concentrate on what matters most to them. Let’s take a look at our subcommittees:
Community is committed to improving the communities in which we live and serve by offering local involvement opportunities, tracking and monitoring volunteer hours, and encouraging matching donations.
Customers ensures we’re improving the lives of our customers and clients through our business and collaborative partnerships. This group of employee-owners are committed to engaging our clients for a sustainable relationship in which both businesses benefit. Our clients’ success is our success.
Environment strives to challenge the standards we currently hold for ourselves and to improve upon them. This committee is focused on using business as an avenue to clean up the world around us by holding us accountable to composting, reducing energy usage, and improving our environmental footprint in operations, capabilities, services, and partnerships.
Governance works closely with our leadership and financial team to ensure transparency around our company mission, values, and purpose, all while enhancing ethical accountability from our Board of Directors. Working to stay ahead of the curve, this group also aids in identifying top new potential benefits and resources for our robust employee benefits package.
Workers thrive on the fundamental belief that our employee-owners truly come first. This committee offers educational opportunities, health and wellness breaks, and help to monitor employee engagement and satisfaction. They also work with our Employee Communications Committee (ECC) to ensure useful and inclusive communication about our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and B Corp efforts.
This past March, we celebrated B Corp Month by hosting a B Corp 101 class, composting lessons, wellness days complete with facials and fitness classes, and an electronics e-waste recycling program that matched recycled dollars to give back to the community. As we’ve learned in business “what gets you here, won’t get you there” and we’re always looking for positive ways to elevate our agency further to truly be a force for good.
